CHENNAI: Former India opener and chief selector of Chennai Super Kings VB Chandrasekhar today justified the $1.5 million spent on one dayer skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) players’ auction saying that Dhoni’s brand value forced them to raise the initial bid.
“Dhoni is the national youth icon, captain of the one dayer as well as the T20 squad that won the World Cup for us last year. He thus carries a tremendous brand value and hence we decided to raise the ante in our bid to secure him for Chennai Super Kings,” Chandrasekhar said.

MUMBAI: Even before a single ball has been bowled, the game has begun. By the look of things, it could end up becoming the humdinger of all matches. The ad rates for the soon-to-debut Indian Premier League (IPL) is equalling the rates prevalent for the World Cup.
Sony Max, the official broadcaster, has managed to close 75% of its advertising inventory at rates commensurate with the World Cup. A commitment of Rs 220 crore from sponsors has already come in with six sponsors booked for the series beginning April 18. Sony insiders told ET the broadcaster is looking at reaching the Rs 300 crore mark in ad revenues. Dubai (PTI): International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday gave a stamp of approval to the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) while refusing to recognise the Indian Cricket League (ICL).
Announcing a host of decisions at the end of two-day meeting of the ICC Executive Board, President-elect David Morgan said IPL was official cricket just like the County Championship in England whereas ICL was unofficial as it was not approved by the BCCI.
“Since ICL is not approved by BCCI so it is unofficial cricket,” he said.
Morgan said the Executive Board agreed that the IPL was a good concept and although the introduction of privately owned franchises introduced risks to the game, it also provided possible benefits.

KARACHI (Reuters) - Pakistan’s cricket authorities will decide this week on a policy to govern players who have signed up for the Indian Premier League.
The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi said guidelines need to be set out for the players when their IPL schedule clashes with national team commitments. The 44-day IPL tournament starts on April 18.
“The governing body will decide on a clear policy but obviously we believe players need to give first preference to national commitments,” Naghmi told reporters on Tuesday.

WEST INDIES coach John Dyson has urged organisers of the Indian Premier League to allow his three most senior players to contest the Test series against Australia, or risk eroding the foundations of the game worldwide.
Dyson’s comments follow an admission from the West Indies Cricket Board chief executive, Donald Peters, that his side could lose batting mainstays Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the first two Tests against Australia, scheduled for early May, due to IPL commitments. Peters’s statement highlighted the vulnerability of the International Cricket Council’s smaller nations to raids from lucrative Twenty20 competitions - a situation that has prompted player unions to call for an annual “IPL window” to avoid scheduling conflicts. The proposal is being discussed at an ICC executive meeting in Dubai this week.
