ipl brands
The buzz about the IPL keeps getting louder and teams owned by filmstars seem to have the clear edge. Cricketers and actors together combined can be quite heady. You saw the frenzy in Kolkata and Mumbai when Sha Rrukh Khan announced his team’s name, colours, mascot, theme song and most importantly sponsors.

Shah Rukh Khan, Kolkata Knight Riders, said, “We are the only private limited company, which is trying to make a foray into this. So, it’s not that the sponsors will come up on board. I am begging sponsors to be on board, so that I can live this dream.”

When Shah Rukh Khan turns on the charm it’s hard to resist. So, sponsors like real estate company Housing Development & Infrastructure, or HDIL, Reebok, Belmonte, and Tag Heuer are already on board. Kolkata Knight Riders, which only cost USD 80 million to assemble, seems to be a step ahead of other teams and has already thrown down the challenge.

Lahore, Mar 20: Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf could get the permission on March 29 to join in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a final hearing of his case by the Mumbai-based arbitration court.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League is planning to pay a “retainer” to players from other countries to discourage them from joining the breakaway Indian Cricket League. Although a final decision is yet to be taken, it seems that the IPL itself is divided over the move to pay the players to stop them from being snared by the ICL, says an official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The lucrative IPL, an arm of the BCCI and backed by the International Cricket Council, starts on 18 April. The ICL, promoted by the business tycoon, Mr Subhash Chandra, is organising its third tournament. Both tournaments are on the Twenty20 format. “The idea was floated by a powerful member of the IPL governing council, who is also a former India player, following a decision to get tougher with people or agencies around the world being approached aggressively by the ICL,” the BCCI source said on condition of anonymity. “His idea was that one way to stop the players from signing up for the ICL was to pay them a certain amount (fee). For this, he argued, a fund could be earmarked,” the source disclosed. But some members of IPL council colleagues do not agree. “Those who are not in favour of the retainers say that if the IPL starts giving fees, there will be no end to this mess because players from all over would start approaching the IPL, saying that they are being approached by ICL,” he said. Also it would require a huge amount since the number of players could go up to as many as 250. Another council member is said to have opined that since the IPL has some of the world’s best players, it should not worry about fringe players being wooed away by the ICL. The IPL, comprising 59 matches, will be played over 45 days starting on 18 April. Matches will be telecast live on SET Max, which along with the World Sports Group paid $1.026 billion to get the television rights for 10 years. The winning team will receive $3 million. The Champions’ Twenty20 will follow the IPL and it will comprise two teams each from Australia, Pakistan, England and South Africa - besides, of course, India. It will carry a winning prize of $5 million. The IPL governing council comprises the BCCI vice-president, Mr Lalit Modi, who is its chairman and commissioner, the former BCCI president, Mr IS Bindra, the board vice presidents, Mr Chirayu Amin and Mr Rajeev Shukla, and the Delhi District and District Cricket Association president, Mr Arun Jaitely, besides former India captains Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri. Mr Bindra will soon be replaced, given his his appointment as the ICC’s principal advisor.
