Indian Premier League
 Twenty20 Competition By BCCI

The extremist political party, Shiv Sena, has returned out of its political hibernation of sorts with a fulmination against Pak players currently playing in the multi-million dollar Indian Premier League. The party’s executive President Uddhav Thackrey asked the IPL authorities to ban Pak players from playing in the league. His diatribe came just hours before Mumbai Indians’ home game against Kolkata Knight Riders.

He labeled Pakistanis as enemies of the entire nation and reminded everyone that his party has been campaigning against them playing the country. “They (Pakistanis) are the enemies of the entire nation and we have been opposing their playing here for many years now,” he told reporters.

Some habits can be difficult to break and Sena is bound by its old ways of engaging in irrational chauvinism. Perhaps if someone could apprise them of the fact that the world has entered a new millennium – that of cultural convergence, tolerance, and globalization- they might just reinvent their old partisan attitude.

Anyways not many people usually lend their ears to the Sena, and besides people are so engrossed with the IPL at this moment that they have no time to heed the senseless Sena.

Shaun Pollock led a stand-out seam-bowling performance as the Mumbai Indians notched up the most convincing win of the tournament, and their fifth in a row, handing the Kolkata Knight Riders an eight-wicket drubbing at the Wankhede Stadium. None of Kolkata’s batsmen came to terms with the seamer-friendly pitch, crumbling to an embarrassing 67 all out - the lowest score of the tournament and the fifth-lowest in all Twenty20 matches - before Sanath Jayasuriya hastened the finish with a 17-ball 48, as Mumbai sailed home with 87 deliveries to spare - a record in all Twenty20 games - significantly boosting their hopes of a semi-final berth.

The visitors were put in by Sachin Tendulkar, who won his second toss in a row, but even he wouldn’t have dreamed of the display his bowlers served up. The pitch helped significantly, offering bounce and plenty of seam movement to each of the five bowlers who were used - in fact, so good were the conditions for seam bowling that Rajesh Pawar, the left-arm spinner who made his IPL debut, wasn’t even pressed into the attack.

Mumbai, May 15 Having bagged the global media rights for the Indian Premier League (at $1.026 billion), the Singapore-based World Sport Group (WSG) has recovered 60 per cent of its investments for the first five years.

Mr Venu Nair, CEO, WSG, told Business Line, “We have sold the global media rights for the first five years and have recovered 60 per cent of the investment. The rest of the cost will be recovered in the next five years when we would get better value as there has been huge interest for the IPL matches worldwide.” Having sold the IPL rights for international TV, global radio, mobile and Internet to a host of companies worldwide, WSG expects to sell the rights at a 30-40 per cent premium for the next 6-10 years of the league matches.

MUMBAI: Which is the bigger craze? Shah Rukh Khan and cricket or Shah Rukh Khan with tiny tots in a game show for adults? Though advertising rates for both are pegged at Rs 2 lakh per ten seconds, SRK’s antics on the field with cricket crazy fans overshadowed his stunts with kids and their attempt to surpass fifth graders.

According to a report by India Media Exchange (IMX), which tracks viewership across television channels, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a clear leader in terms of television ratings (TRPs). This, despite the fact that the IPL effect on women viewers appears to be fading.
