Vijay Mallya - The cranky team owner

Mr. Mallya has emerged as the most sore looser among all the IPL team owners. But the man can drink to even this dubious distinction as he has enough liquor for perhaps all the joys and afflictions in this world.

His team has firmly ensconced itself at the very bottom of the IPL points table with seven defeats in nine matches. Acres of print and electronic space have been dedicated to strictures of the team’s baffling composition. Now the liquor baron himself has opened a verbal front against his team’s captain, encumbering him with all the blame for the Royal Challenger’s IPL debacle. But then this isn’t the time to play the blame game as the Bangalore Royal Challengers are still playing for pride for that will help them retain some public support.

By washing the Challengers’ dirty Lenin in public, the liquor magnet is sending all the wrong signals to the people who now have one more reason to despise the BRC team. The recent remarks by Vijay Mallya and the Charu-Sharma-pink-slip episode are a colossal PR faux pas. Given Mallya’s glaring lack of public relations virtuosity, I think the team’s PR guy is also terribly out of form. I think Mallya has just reinforced the belief that there is a rift in the side. Also he comes across as a sore looser.

DURBAN: Two South African provincial cricket teams have reportedly been offered around $100,000 to release some of their top players for the first week of the Indian Premier League, which they would otherwise miss because of domestic commitments.

The Titans players the IPL wanted released early are Albie Morkel, A B de Villiers and Dale Steyn but the club turned down the offer, Johannesburg-based newspaper reported.

The Cape Cobras are reported to have been offered more than $100,000 for the release of the likes of South African captain Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher, the paper claimed.

The buzz about the IPL keeps getting louder and teams owned by filmstars seem to have the clear edge. Cricketers and actors together combined can be quite heady. You saw the frenzy in Kolkata and Mumbai when Sha Rrukh Khan announced his team’s name, colours, mascot, theme song and most importantly sponsors.

Shah Rukh Khan, Kolkata Knight Riders, said, “We are the only private limited company, which is trying to make a foray into this. So, it’s not that the sponsors will come up on board. I am begging sponsors to be on board, so that I can live this dream.”

When Shah Rukh Khan turns on the charm it’s hard to resist. So, sponsors like real estate company Housing Development & Infrastructure, or HDIL, Reebok, Belmonte, and Tag Heuer are already on board. Kolkata Knight Riders, which only cost USD 80 million to assemble, seems to be a step ahead of other teams and has already thrown down the challenge.
